These pages exist because the most consequential questions in guitar gear are not "which pedal" but "which kind of thing." Whether you want an overdrive or a distortion, whether the gain should come from the pedal or the amp, and whether the money should go on a pedal at all — get those three right and the specific product barely matters.

Every guide here routes into the hubs rather than selling you something. Where a guide does recommend a product, it is because the guide's own reasoning points at one, and the reasoning is on the page for you to disagree with.

01Start with the taxonomy

If the amp's clean tone at your playing volume is not something you like, buy the amp — pedals cannot fix a platform you do not enjoy. If the amp is fine, pedals are far better value per dollar. The full guide works through the cases.
+ Are analog pedals better than digital ones?
For some jobs, in specific measurable ways. Analog delay degrades its repeats in a way people like; digital delay gives you time, tap tempo and modes an analog circuit cannot. The reliable difference is current draw: analog dirt draws single-digit mA, digital time effects draw around 100 mA.
+ How many pedals is too many?
When you cannot say what problem the next one solves that the board does not already solve. There is no magic number — but every pedal added is more current draw, another patch cable, and another thing to fail on stage.
