Two specifications decide an octave pedal: whether it tracks chords, and whether you can blend the dry signal back in. Buy the BOSS OC-5 for both a mono voice and a chord-capable Poly mode with published electrical figures, the EHX Nano POG if you play chords and want a separate dry output, and the EHX Pitch Fork if you want intervals other than an octave and the ability to sweep them with a foot.

This is a category where the marketing word and the useful word are different. Almost every pedal here says "polyphonic" somewhere; what matters is what it does when the tracking fails, and how much clean signal you have left to hide behind when it does.

03Polyphonic and monophonic, and why it is the whole decision

A monophonic octave circuit works by locking to one fundamental frequency and generating a new waveform from it. Give it one note and it produces a clean, fat octave with a character of its own — the sound on a great many records. Give it two notes at once and it has no single frequency to lock to, so it produces something between a warble and a squawk.

A polyphonic circuit analyzes the whole signal instead and shifts everything in it, which is why it survives a full chord. What it gives up is character: the analog mono sound is the reason the OC-2 lasted forty years and the reason BOSS built a recreation of it into the OC-5 rather than dropping it.

BOSS OC-5 Octave

The default, and the only one here with a full spec sheet

The number60 mA, 1 M ohm in, 1 k ohm out, -20 dBu nominal input. All published by BOSS.

This is the pedal to buy if you are not sure which kind of octave you want, because it contains both. BOSS describes Vintage as a recreation of the mono OC-2 from 1982 and Poly as the mode for chord playing, and the switch between them is on the outside of the enclosure rather than buried.

The Range knob is the control worth understanding before you buy. In Poly mode BOSS states it restricts the effect to the lower notes on the instrument, and at its lowest setting isolates the octave to the bottom note of a chord — so you can play an octave bass line under normal chords and melodies without the octave smearing the whole voicing. A GUITAR/BASS switch optimizes the tracking engine for either instrument.

The cons are real. No adaptor is in the box, and at roughly five hours of alkaline battery life batteries are not a plan for this pedal — budget a supply output for its 60 mA. There is no expression pedal jack, so the octave blend cannot be swept with a foot. And Vintage is a mono recreation, so anything with two notes in it needs Poly.

Electro-Harmonix Nano POG

Chords, and splitting the octave to a second amp

The number2 M ohm input — the highest here — with 700 ohm effect and 500 ohm dry outputs.

EHX states it tracks single notes, arpeggios and full chords, and the reason to pay for it over a cheaper pedal is what happens on the chords rather than on the single notes. Three separate level controls — dry, sub octave, octave up — mean you are mixing three signals rather than choosing between two, which is the difference between an organ-like sound and a muddy one.

The separate Dry Out is the specification that gets overlooked. It lets the clean signal go to one amp and the octave signal to another, or the octave to a bass rig while the dry stays on a guitar amp. That is a genuinely different capability, not a convenience.

It also publishes a 2 M ohm input impedance, the highest on this page, which means it loads whatever is in front of it less than anything else here. Silent footswitching, and it ships with its own 9.6DC-200 supply rather than expecting you to own one.

The cons: one octave up and one octave down, full stop — no two-octave setting and no detune, both of which the Pitch Fork has. EHX publishes no current-draw figure, so you cannot budget a supply output for it without measuring. And there is no expression input.

Electro-Harmonix Pitch Fork

Intervals other than an octave, and sweeping them with a foot

The number+/- three octave range; 11 published intervals.

This is the widest-ranging pedal here and the one that stops being only an octave pedal. The Shift switch has eleven published positions — Detune at 17 cents, Minor 2nd, Major 2nd, Major 3rd, Perfect 4th, Perfect 5th, Major 6th, Minor 7th, then 1, 2 and 3 Octaves — and a three-position toggle sends the shift up, down, or both at once in Dual mode.

The expression control is what makes it worth the board space. The shift amount can be a fixed interval or swept continuously by an expression pedal or a control voltage, which is a whammy-style effect the other two pedals here simply cannot produce.

The cons: it shifts by a fixed interval rather than following a key, so a Perfect 5th stays a Perfect 5th whether or not the song wants a diminished one — that is a harmony problem and pitch shifters explained covers it properly. EHX publishes no current-draw or impedance figures for it. And tracking degrades on fast passages, as it does on every pitch shifter.

BOSS PS-6 Harmonist

Not this job, and it is the pedal people buy for it

We are not picking this as an octave pedal, and it is a good pedal that appears elsewhere on this site for what it actually does.

BOSS publishes four modes: Harmony, Pitch Shifter, Detune and S-BEND. The headline feature is Harmony, which is key-aware — you tell it what key the song is in and it generates a diatonic line, changing the interval to stay in that key. That is the one thing no pedal above can do, and it is worth real money if you need it.

It is the wrong purchase if what you want is an octave. You are paying for a key selector and a bend engine, drawing 65 mA to get there, and the octave you end up with is not better than the OC-5's. Buy this one for harmony lines; buy one of the three above for octaves. Pitch shifters explained is the page that separates the two products properly.

04Where an octave pedal goes

Early, and before your drive pedals. Pitch tracking works on the fundamental frequency of what it receives, and a distortion pedal adds harmonics and compresses the signal — both of which make the fundamental harder to find. Feed a tracker a clean signal and it tracks; feed it a fuzz and it will glitch on notes it would otherwise have handled.

The exception is deliberate. Octave-into-fuzz is a documented sound in its own right, and it fails in a way people like. If that is what you are after, put the octave first anyway and drive it — you want the fuzz reacting to the octave, not the tracker reacting to the fuzz. One more placement note: an octave pedal near the front of the chain is looking straight at your pickups, so its input impedance matters more than it would in the middle of a board. The Nano POG's 2 M ohm and the OC-5's 1 M ohm are both high enough not to load a passive pickup — a 130 k ohm input in that position would audibly dull your top end. 05Three settings that actually get used

  1. The bass line. One octave down, dry signal up, octave level about half. Used to double a riff so it reads as bigger without a second player. This is the setting the OC-5's Range knob exists for.
  2. The organ. One octave up and one down mixed with the dry at roughly equal levels, played as chords. This needs polyphonic tracking and is the reason the Nano POG has three separate level knobs.
  3. The sub. Two octaves down at a low level under a clean part, barely audible on its own. It thickens the low end without being identifiable as an effect, and it is the setting most likely to disappear the moment a bass player is in the room.

06What tracking failure sounds like, and what to do

It is not subtle. The octave drops out on fast passages, jumps to a wrong interval on the attack of a note, or warbles on anything below the low E. Every pitch shifter does this, at different thresholds, and no amount of money removes it entirely.

  • Play higher. Tracking is worst at the bottom of the instrument, because low frequencies need more cycles to identify.
  • Play cleaner. Let notes ring rather than overlapping them, and mute what you are not playing.
  • Blend more dry in. A tracking error at 30% octave level is a texture; the same error at 100% is a mistake.
  • Put it before the drive. Covered above, and it is the single most effective fix.
  • Add a compressor in front. A steadier input level gives the tracker a steadier fundamental — best compressor pedals covers which ones have a blend control.

07Do you need one

Less often than the demos suggest. An octave pedal is a texture and a trick rather than a foundation, and it is the pedal most likely to be bought, used on one song, and left switched off. If you are choosing between this and a compressor, a tuner or a decent power supply, buy those first — your first pedalboard sets out the order.

Buy one when you can name the part. Doubling a riff an octave down so a three-piece sounds like four. An organ-like pad under a clean chord. A synthetic lead an octave up. Those are all real jobs with no other solution. "It sounds cool in the shop" is not, and this is a category where that distinction costs about the same as a good overdrive.
